Keto
Just when you thought you had to say goodbye to your favorite foods
What is The Keto Diet?
The standard ketogenic (Keto) diet is a diet that’s low in carbohydrates and an increase in protein and fat and typically contains 70 percent fat, 20 percent protein, and 10 percent carbs.
The keto diet concept was developed in 1924 by Dr. Russel Wilder to manage seizures in pediatric patients. It also originated to help with epilepsy. More recently, other benefits became known – weight loss and reversal/control of type 2 diabetes.
How it works
After 3 or 4 days of restricting carbohydrates, your central nervous system looks for an alternative energy source: ketones. The two types of ketones are acetoacetate and β-hydroxybutyrate. These bodies are produced in the liver, and as they are made by the breakdown of fats, ketosis takes place: an indicator of fat loss.
Decisions, Decisions...
It would be lovely if things were perfect, but we know that’s not the case. Despite the popularity, there are some disadvantages. The advantages outweighs the disadvantages, but I still need to mention them. Some are:
Pros:
– rapid weight loss
– blood sugar control
– reduced blood pressure
– total cholesterol reduction
– decrease triglycerides
– increase HDL-C
– improved insulin sensitivity
Cons:
– muscle cramps
– Keto flu (short-term side effects may include bad breath, nausea, fatigue, vomiting, headache, dizziness, constipation, and loss of energy)
– Long-term side effects may include hepatic steatosis, kidney stones, hypoproteinemia, and vitamin deficiency.
Keto's Success
Regardless of the cons, many people love the results the Keto diet produces. The diet became successful because someone believed in it, reaching their desired weight loss results. One person tried it, and another, and then another, and so on.
I’ve heard and seen how effective this diet can be when it’s followed. I’m not saying you can’t indulge occasionally, just don’t indulge too frequently. It’s been demonstrated that it’s more difficult to get back into a routine once you’ve broken it. You must regain mental control, that is, the same focused mind you had before you took a brief detour from The Ketogenic Diet and the same mindset you had when you were adamant about losing weight.

You don’t have to give up your favorite foods. There are many keto foods and snacks on the market today, and the number keeps growing. Disclaimer: Bodies react differently to diets (a.k.a – lifestyle change). The information above is for information purposes only and isn’t intended to take the place of medical advice. Studies are still ongoing, and due to small sample sizes and lack of strong evidence on evaluating potential risks, it is recommended to seek advice from a medical professional before starting “The Keto Diet”.
